Bruce Conner, Arachne, mixed media: nylon stockings, collage, cardboard, 1959
Bruce Conner was one of the artists in San Fransisco that made the art movement on the west coast during the 1950s very serious and very fascinating. Instead of moving to New York City were he could have had a much more successful career, he stayed in San Fransisco.
This piece tells the story of Arachne, a weaver who said that she could spin better than the goddess Athena. The angry goddess turned Arachne into a spider.
Bruce Conner said of this piece:
“a rewarding experience for me is [a story] where you are not told what to think and what to do. Otherwise, that’s what you get in jail. That’s what you get with government.”
